Welcome!

Sam, Katie, and Sara-lab partners extraordinaire- had talked for a while about making a chemistry-themed blog with their awesome chemistry-related experiences. One day they were reminiscing about playing google docs tag (chasing each other with their cursors in the spreadsheet) and after that nerdy memory they decided it was about time to go for it.

Welcome to the epic adventure!

Demons and Fluffy Water

So sitting in the library, playing on facebook, I started to talk to a friend who just got back from his mission.  What did we talk about?

This man:

And equally important, this facebook group:

And then I read and enjoyed the many quotes we've collected.  I can't believe how much time has passed, and how much chemistry we've learned.  Who knew I would actually start to think of cold objects as good conductors of heat, or that I would actually lose lots of sleep trying to understand chemistry concepts?  Or maybe I was just trying to complete my Chem 391 paper... Either way, I thoroughly enjoyed reading through these quotes again, and I assume that you would too.  But what are your demons telling you?

Two new official elements!

Check out this article, How to Put a New Element on the Periodic Table. What do you guys think Element 114 and Element 116 will be named? (Or should be named?)

The Periodic Table of Comic Books

I saw the link to this site in an ACS Weekly Newsletter. It has comics involving elements. Quite chemically hilarious.

I think I need to purchase Mrs. Methane

I stumbled upon this etsy shop today of a girl who crochets molecules in her spare time. Oh my goodness. I'm sort of dying to buy the pink cycohexane, but it's $50! Luckily, Mrs. Methane is only $15, so maybe I can call this a late birthday present to myself, right?

See evidence of nerdy cuteness:

Bonding and Antibonding experiences

So I was looking at some of my old blog entries and I found this from Thursday, April 23, 2009. It's about a nerdy chemistry bonding experience. I figured this might be a good venue to share it again:

Party...chemistry style

Some of my chem friends decided to get together to watch a goofy movie after our finals ended. I was looking forward to some nice relaxing chill time. It was definitely fun and entertaining (my friends even more than the movie- one knew all the words and two sang along sometimes), but not quite as relaxing as I had expected. People commented on the laws of buoyancy violated in the river-floating scene, debated over whether the gloves the characters wore were latex or nitrile, and disputed the presence of carbonyl peaks in the clouds. Call me a slacker, but I'm totally okay with not mentioning chemistry related topics while watching a mindless movie after finals.

Actually, I lied. That was probably my favorite part: the nerdy jokes. That's why I love those people- their simultaneous coolness and nerdyness and total self-acceptance. While watching that movie in a basement classroom of the chemistry building, I realized I'm definitely going to miss them this summer- nitrile gloves and all.

My Brash Attempt at Poetry

My sister, the poet, inspires me. She's much better than me, but here's my poems. You're supposed to write about what you think about. What do I think about? Chemistry... duh

Synthesis

Redox and Diels Alder

Porphyrins and hemoglobin

Cobalamines, Freidel-Crafts, coordination compounds, electrolysis, hydration, hydrogenation, necleophilic attack, acid-base, organic, inorganic…

Breathless

Consumes my life while consuming limiting reagents

A Whole Four Years

My passion is odd

When people hear, they tune me out

“Chemistry? Oh…”

Snap judgement for someone I’m not

Or stop thinking cause they think I’ll do all the thinking

Yeah, I spend way more time than you

Thinking about the way the world works

The wisdom of the carbons that know exactly

The right number of hydrogens to be right

Even Microsoft says I’m wrong

What do they know?

I know a whole four years of it
