So we after actually starting out inorganic synthesis lab assignment, one of our graduating class (April 2010!!) instigated a conversation about the true definitions of geek, nerd and dork. It was generally agreed that a nerd = someone overly interested in scientific subjects, geek = someone with scientific and often fantastical hobbies and past times outside the social norm, dork = someone who says or behaves in a socially awkward/backward fashion, though not always. I'm willing to hear you different definitions, but the ironic moment came after all that.
The conversation dying, one commented how they felt they should be more accepting to other geeks, nerds and dorks and their highly awkward and often annoying tendencies, but weren't. They touted their own social prowess/maturity and how they pitied the other poor souls. The ironic thing is that I was thinking the same thing about them. Thinking it through a bit more I came to the conclusion that we all have our socially awkward moments, I mean...we're chemistry majors...duh we're awkward. As I came to this conclusion I realized that I was stroking the fake mustache I'd stuck above my lip. Case closed.
hahahaha
ReplyDeleteI have to say, I prefer to be labeled a nerd.
